What Is SpaceX Dragon? The Spacecraft, Explained

Dragon is SpaceX's spacecraft for carrying cargo and astronauts to the ISS. Here's what it does, the cargo vs crew versions, and how it returns to Earth.

Dragon is the spacecraft built by SpaceX — the capsule that rides on top of a Falcon 9 rocket to carry cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) and back. While the rocket does the work of reaching orbit, Dragon is the part that actually holds the supplies or the crew. It’s also reusable, and it made history as the first private spacecraft to fly astronauts to orbit.

Two versions: Cargo and Crew

Dragon comes in two flavors:

  • Cargo Dragon delivers supplies, experiments and equipment to the ISS, then returns to Earth with results and gear — one of the few vehicles that can bring significant cargo back intact.
  • Crew Dragon carries astronauts. It seats up to four for trips to the station, with life support, touchscreen controls and an emergency escape system.

How Dragon flies

A typical mission follows the same arc: a Falcon 9 launches Dragon to orbit, the capsule separates and spends a day or so catching up to the ISS, then docks with the station automatically. After weeks or months attached, it undocks, re-enters the atmosphere behind a heat shield, and lowers itself on parachutes to a gentle ocean splashdown, where a recovery ship collects it.

Why Dragon matters

Dragon restored the ability to launch astronauts to orbit from US soil and proved that a private company could safely fly crew — a milestone in opening up spaceflight beyond government agencies. Its reusability, like the rest of SpaceX’s hardware, also helps drive down the cost of reaching orbit.

FAQ

What is SpaceX Dragon used for?

It carries cargo and astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Cargo Dragon hauls supplies and experiments; Crew Dragon transports astronauts.

What’s the difference between Cargo Dragon and Crew Dragon?

Cargo Dragon carries supplies and equipment, while Crew Dragon is fitted with seats, life support and controls to carry up to four astronauts safely.

How does Dragon return to Earth?

It undocks from the station, re-enters the atmosphere protected by a heat shield, and descends under parachutes to a splashdown in the ocean, where a ship recovers it.

Is Dragon reusable?

Yes. SpaceX refurbishes and reflies Dragon capsules, which helps lower the cost of cargo and crew missions compared with building a new spacecraft each time.
