July
July 11 — Moon, Mars and the Pleiades at dawn 👁️🔭 Before sunrise, a thin crescent Moon sits near Mars and the Pleiades star cluster. A pretty grouping, best in binoculars.

August — the month of the year
August 12 — Total solar eclipse 🌍 The Moon’s shadow sweeps across Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, with totality lasting over two minutes at best. It is not visible from most of the U.S. — only far-northern regions catch a small partial bite. If you’re in the path in Europe, it’s the event of the decade; everyone else will be watching photos roll in. Never look at the partial phases without certified solar-eclipse glasses.
August 12–13 — Perseid meteor shower 👁️ The summer favorite, and 2026 is a banner year: the peak lands on the new Moon, so there’s no moonlight to drown out the meteors. August 28 — Deep partial lunar eclipse 👁️🌍 Overnight on August 27–28, more than 90% of the Moon slides into Earth’s shadow, leaving it a dim coppery red with a bright sliver on one edge. Well placed for the Americas (late evening of the 27th across North America) and Europe. Totally safe to watch with the naked eye, and lovely in binoculars.

September 22–23 — Venus at its brightest, then the equinox 👁️ Venus blazes as a brilliant “morning star” before dawn in late September — impossible to miss and the easiest planet to spot. The September equinox on the 23rd marks the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, when the nights start winning back the sky.
September 26 — Neptune at opposition 🔭 Neptune is closest and brightest for the year — but be realistic: even at its best it’s a tiny blue-gray dot that needs a telescope and a finder chart. One for dedicated observers, not a casual look-up.
October
October 4 — Saturn at opposition 🔭 This is the night to see Saturn: it rises at sunset, stays up all night, and is closest and brightest for the year. October 21 — Orionids peak 👁️ Debris from Halley’s Comet, producing 10–20 fast, faint meteors an hour. Worth a look if the sky’s clear, but not a stay-up-all-night shower.
November
November 17–18 — Leonids peak 👁️ A modest 10–15 meteors an hour in a normal year (every ~33 years they storm — this isn’t one of those years). Best after midnight.
November 24 — The year’s biggest supermoon 👁️ The closest, brightest full Moon of 2026. Honestly? To the naked eye it looks much like any full Moon — the size difference is real but tiny. The magic is watching it rise huge and golden on the horizon, an illusion of your eye and brain. Worth catching at moonrise; don’t expect fireworks.
November 25 — Uranus at opposition 🔭 Like Neptune, technically at its best — and technically a faint dot. Binoculars can just pick it up from a dark sky if you know exactly where to look; a telescope shows a small green disc.
December
December 13–14 — Geminid meteor shower 👁️ The most reliable shower of the year — up to ~120 bright, often colorful meteors an hour under ideal skies, and unlike most showers, the Geminids put on a decent show even in the evening. A waxing crescent Moon sets early in 2026, leaving the prime post-midnight hours dark. Dress for a cold night and give your eyes time to adjust.
December 21 — December solstice 👁️ The longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere — which, for stargazers, simply means more sky to enjoy.
December 24–28 — Holiday supermoon and a planet grouping 👁️ The year’s final supermoon on the 24th, followed by the Moon arcing past Jupiter, Mars and the star Regulus on the mornings around the 26th–28th. A fine excuse to step outside over the holidays.
A few observing essentials
Most of the best events above are naked-eye — your eyes really are the main instrument. To get the most from any of them:
- Get away from city lights. Dark skies matter more than any gear.
- Let your eyes adapt for 20–30 minutes, and avoid bright phone screens (use a red light).
- Dress warmer than you expect and bring something to lie back on.
