Perseid Meteor Shower 2026: When, Where, and How to See the Year's Best Show

The 2026 Perseids peak overnight on August 12–13 under a new-Moon sky — the darkest conditions in years. Here's exactly when to watch, where to look, and how to see the most meteors.

The Perseid meteor shower of 2026 peaks overnight on August 12 into the early hours of August 13 — and this year is a good one. The peak lands almost exactly on the new Moon, so there’s no moonlight to wash out the fainter streaks. Under a dark sky, the Perseids can throw down dozens of meteors an hour, and 2026 gives you the rare gift of a genuinely black sky on the best night. You don’t need a telescope or any gear — just your eyes, a clear sky away from city lights, and some patience. Here’s how to make the most of it.

When to watch the 2026 Perseids

The shower is active for weeks — roughly mid-July through late August — but the meteor count climbs steeply to a sharp peak on the night of August 12–13. The single best window is from midnight until dawn, when the radiant (the point the meteors seem to fly out from) climbs high in the northeastern sky and Earth turns to face the debris stream head-on.

The forecast peak falls around midday Universal Time on August 13, which is daytime across North America — so don’t fixate on one exact hour. Both the night of August 12–13 and the following night of August 13–14 will be excellent. Rates are also worth a look for a few nights on either side; the Perseids have a broad, generous shoulder, so a cloudy peak night isn’t a wasted shower.

If you can only catch an hour, make it the hour or two before dawn. That’s when the radiant is highest and the meteors come fastest.

Why 2026 is an exceptional year

Meteor showers live and die by the Moon. A bright gibbous or full Moon floods the sky with light and hides everything but the brightest fireballs — and in some years the Perseid peak is all but ruined by it.

2026 is the opposite. The new Moon falls on August 12, the same day as the peak, so the Moon is effectively absent from the night sky. No moonlight means the faint, ordinary meteors — the ones that make up the bulk of the count — stay visible. In a year like this, an observer under a truly dark, rural sky can reasonably hope to see 60 to 90 meteors an hour near the peak. From a typical suburb you’ll see fewer, but a moonless Perseid peak is about as good as backyard meteor watching gets. Years like this are worth planning around.

Where the meteors come from

The Perseids are debris shed by Comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle, a comet that loops past the Sun roughly once every 133 years. Each August, Earth plows through the dusty trail it has left along its orbit. The specks — most no larger than a grain of sand — hit our atmosphere at around 37 miles per second and burn up in a brilliant streak.

That high speed is why the Perseids are so good: fast meteors tend to be bright, and they often leave glowing “trains” that hang in the air for a second or two after the meteor itself is gone. The shower is also known for the occasional fireball — a meteor brighter than any planet that can briefly light up the ground. How to watch them — what actually works

This is the rare bit of stargazing where your naked eye beats every piece of equipment you own. Binoculars and telescopes have far too narrow a field of view; meteors flash across huge swaths of sky, and you simply can’t predict where the next one will appear. So leave the gear in the bag and do this instead:

  • Get away from city lights. This matters more than anything else. A dark rural site can show ten times what a bright suburb does. Even a 30-minute drive to darker skies pays off.
  • Give your eyes time to adapt. It takes a full 20–30 minutes in the dark for your night vision to kick in — and one glance at a phone resets it. Use a red flashlight if you need light, and keep the screen away.
  • Lie back and take in as much sky as possible. A reclining chair or a blanket on the ground is the single best “instrument” for a meteor shower. Don’t stare at the radiant — look about two-thirds of the way up, anywhere overhead, and let the whole sky fill your view.
  • Be patient. Meteors come in fits and starts. You might see nothing for five minutes, then three in ten seconds. Give it at least an hour.
  • Dress warmer than you think. Even an August night gets cold when you’re lying still for an hour.

When is the best night to see the Perseids in 2026?

The night of August 12 into the early morning of August 13, with the hours from midnight to dawn being best. The following night, August 13–14, is nearly as good, so a cloudy peak isn’t the end of the shower.

Why are the 2026 Perseids special?

The peak coincides with the new Moon on August 12, so there’s no moonlight to drown out faint meteors. Dark, moonless skies are the single biggest factor in how many meteors you’ll see, which makes 2026 one of the better Perseid years.

How many meteors will I actually see?
